The Chicago Reader is proud to announce Salem Collo-Julin as editor-in-chief. Collo-Julin has served on the editorial staff of the Reader since 2019, most recently as managing editor.
“It’s been my honor and privilege to work for this organization from my first day,” Collo-Julin said. “I truly feel lucky to be able to serve the news outlet that has faithfully chronicled the underground, the above ground, the triumphs and challenges, and all the best of the Chicago experience for the last 51-plus years.”
From 1999-2014, Collo-Julin was a member of the midwestern art group Temporary Services, and co-edited the book Prisoners’ Inventions (Whitewalls, 2003). She also co-founded Temporary Services’ publishing imprint, Half Letter Press.
In addition to her work with the Reader, Salem’s writing has been found in Windy City Times, the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest, Lumpen, AREA Chicago, the book Organize Your Own (ed. Anthony Romero, Soberscove Press, 2016), and other publications. She was recently awarded the Chicago Review of Books’s 2022 CHIRBy award for Essay/Short Story for her article “It’s quiet around here until it’s not,” which was featured in the Reader’s Sound issue in May 2022.
“As a person who was born here in Chicago just a few years after the Reader was conceived, I’ve had the pleasure of reading, learning, and growing alongside this newspaper for most of my life,” added our new editor-in-chief.
The Reader, a relatively new nonprofit, is published by the Reader Institute for Community Journalism, RICJ, which announced its new CEO & Publisher, Solomon Lieberman, in February.
“First, I want to send all of our best wishes to our outgoing editor-in-chief, Enrique Limón, as he moves on to new projects.” Lieberman said. “From here, we’re all so excited to support Salem as she takes on this role—from her dedication to community journalism and racial-justice reporting to her deep love of Chicago, the Reader is in good hands.”
